Well it was the un-official start of my 2013 RSL season on Saturday as players and coaches made their first appearances of the new season at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday. Not only were the players and coaches there to meet with the media, but things like team photos and intro videos had both groups making the rounds at different stations around the stadium grounds. In between those appearances some stopped by the media room, while some others were caught in hallways between the different stations.
Over the next few days I will be bringing you some video I shot, as well as some pictures and my thoughts on talking with some of the guys. I will start with our two draft picks:
John Stertzer was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 MLS draft, here is the standard info on him:
Weight: 170 lbs.
Date of Birth: Oct. 4, 1990
Hometown: Oakton, Va.
College: University of Maryland
Here is the video of his interview with the local media:
My first impression of him is that he seems very composed, polite and confident. I think he will fit in well with RSL, I like having some more size in our midfield. I will wait to read the paper he wrote in college on soccer in the United States. He spent his entire college career at the University of Maryland, and put up some fairly impressive numbers (check out this great infographic that RSL put together)
More info after the break
RSL clearly felt luck that Devon Sandoval was still around in the second round, and with the team knowing him from some time he spent with RSL last year the team traded some other picks to move up a couple spots to get their man. Here is the standard info on Devon:
Weight: 185 lbs.
Date of Birth: June 16, 1991
Hometown: Albuquerque, N.M.
College: University of New Mexico
Here is the video of his interview with local media:
I really like Devon, (@Big_Dev9) on twitter, he seemed to have a very outgoing personality and I loved that while he wasn’t at the draft that at home with family and friends that when his name was called that it turned into a quick celebration, which we hopefully will see some video of at some point. I think having a hungry young striker who has some size and pace will be a great addition, and with 4 full years of college soccer behind him I hope his adjustment period will be short. You can see more about Devon on that RSL draft pick infographic.
Both of our draft picks really seem to be typical of what Real Salt Lake values, good players who are also good people. It is important to get young players who are willing to, as both guys mentioned, “Work Hard”, that will endear them to RSL head coach Jason Kreis.
I will put up another post soon featuring more from RSL Media Day.
That’s How I See It
